Two homes can both have “asphalt roofs” and still use very different shingles.
The two most common categories are:
3-tab shingles
and
architectural shingles.
GAF describes 3-tab shingles as single-layer asphalt shingles, while architectural—or dimensional—shingles use multiple laminated layers that create a heavier, dimensional appearance.
Both age.
But they don’t necessarily age on the same timeline or look the same while doing it.
3-Tab Shingles
Three-tab shingles typically have:
- A single layer
- A flatter appearance
- Uniform tabs
- Lower initial material cost
GAF currently describes them as the simpler and more economical asphalt option.
As they age, homeowners may notice:
- Curling tabs
- Granule loss
- Cracking
- Wind-related lifting
- Fading
Because the roof has a very uniform pattern, a damaged or missing tab can also be visually obvious.
Architectural Shingles
Architectural shingles use multiple laminated layers.
That gives them:
- More visual depth
- Greater dimensionality
- A heavier profile
GAF describes architectural shingles as multiple layers of asphalt-coated fiberglass laminated together.
They can still eventually develop:
- Granule loss
- Brittleness
- Curling
- Cracking
- Localized damage
“Architectural” does not mean “never ages.”
It means the shingle is constructed differently.
Which One Lasts Longer?
GoNano’s current homeowner guidance gives typical general ranges of approximately:
- 3-tab: 15–20 years
- Architectural: 20–30 years
while emphasizing that actual service life can be shortened by climate, installation quality, ventilation and weather exposure.
Those ranges are guides.
Not expiration dates.
A 17-year-old 3-tab roof may be in very different condition from another roof of the same age.
Can Both Types Be Evaluated for Rejuvenation?
Both are asphalt-shingle systems.
GoNano positions Structural Roof Rejuvenation for aging, structurally sound asphalt-shingle roofs, with eligibility based primarily on actual condition.
That means the important questions remain:
- Is the deck sound?
- Are the shingles still intact?
- Are leaks localized or widespread?
- Is physical failure extensive?
The shingle style alone does not answer those questions.
Don’t Compare Roofs Only by Age
A neighbour may say:
“Mine lasted 25 years.”
That doesn’t automatically tell you what your roof should do.
Their roof may have:
- Different shingles
- Different sun exposure
- Better ventilation
- Different installation
- Different storm history
Know the Shingle Before You Judge the Roof.
If you’re unsure whether your home has 3-tab or architectural shingles—or how much serviceable life they may have left—NanoTech Exteriors can assess the actual roof condition before you make a replacement decision.
